Suzhou Performing Arts Center & Exhibition Hall (China)
C.T. Hsu + Associates designed a new Exhibition and Performing Arts Center for the ancient city of Suzhou located in China’s Jiang Su Province. Working with HBPM Architects, the firm designed a 250,000 SF scheme that suggested traditional Chinese architecture in both form and detail, yet established for the civic structure an organizational and material logic for the new millennium.
The 33,000 SF Exhibition Hall features lecture rooms and a 1,200-seat performance theater. The building’s wave-shaped design captures the profile of the distant mountains to the north. The roof follows the building’s natural line and extends over a monumental porch, reminiscent of the timeless Chinese upward roof detail.
This project design earned C.T. Hsu + Associates and HBPM a 1998 Unbuilt Design Award from the American Institute of Architects Florida Association.
